Nevada Weather Trivia: The winter of 1948-49 was so brutal, that by late January, millions of sheep and cattle had become stranded by snow drifts and cut off from the ranchers and food supplies needed to keep them alive. On January 26th, planes dropped hay across the Silver State as a part of Operation Haylift. According to the University of Nevada, a million sheep and 100,000 head of cattle were fed by more than 525 tons of alfalfa in just the first seven days of the operation. The heroic effort was publicized in a movie in 1950.
