Never Forget... What exactly does “Never Forget” mean? - TopicsExpress

Never Forget... What exactly does “Never Forget” mean? Since 9/11, firefighters from around the world have vowed to “Never Forget”. Not a phrase to be used lightly, and not isolated to a single event or an individual. To “Never Forget” is to consciously understand that nearly 3,000 innocent lives were wrongfully taken by an attack on our nation. It’s understanding that we’re no longer “just” firefighters; we are the nation’s first responders for incidents of all types and hazards. Knowing this fact, it’s our responsibility to dedicate ourselves to preparedness by seeking the proper training, enhancing our knowledge base beyond the scope of previous generations, and developing the skills necessary to perform under the worst of conditions. To “Never Forget” is to acknowledge the selfless courage that was demonstrated by the hundreds of firefighters who responded during the initial phases of the response and the thousands of first responders who came from all areas of our nation to assist in the search and recovery efforts that followed. To “Never Forget” is to honor and respect the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in an effort to carry out the mission of every sworn firefighter: to save lives and protect property. The honor and respect these men have earned goes far beyond their actions on 9/11. They leave behind a legacy of leadership, dedication and professionalism that exceeds any form of measurement. In their honor, it’s our duty to ensure that in the darkest of hours we exemplify the character, the leadership, the dedication and the determination they practiced throughout their careers. Never tarnish the badge, the uniform or the image of our profession. Excerpted from: August 2011 Issue of FireRescue - By Timothy E. Sendelbach
