Neville-West Monroe Football End Spring Football in Different Directions... West Monroe, LA - The spring scrimmage at Don Shows Field at Rebel Stadium Friday was a tale of two storied, championship programs moving in different directions. While West Monroe head coach Jerry Arledge felt his team had their most physical spring in recent memory, it was a lack of physicality from Neville on Friday that caught many off guard. The teams met for a two-hour scrimmage in which the third and fourth string battled for 45 minutes followed by the second string and then the varsity starters. But with many regular starters missing in action, including Neville quarterback J.T. Jackson (playing at the state baseball tournament) and WMHSs Jon Randall Belton (knee surgery) the scrimmage was a time for coaches and fans to see what other players might make for stars this fall. A lot of times that can be a blessing, because you get to some kids step up and perform, Arledge said. We had some guys out this spring which gave some other guys a chance to gain experience and you have to have that in your program throughout the year. West Monroe scored once on a quarterback keeper from Dustin Mitchell while the starting units were on the field. I was proud of our effort, I think this was the most psychical spring we have had, Arledge said. We wanted to accomplish two things and we did both. First, we wanted to be physical and also to identify who the football players were (in game situations). Neville used freshman Jaiden Cole and Christopher Haynes at quarterback, moving the ball at times but not finding the end zone. I think we had a good spring overall, but tonight we were not physical or polished enough like we needed to be, Neville coach Mickey McCarty said. I was pleased with our quarterbacks. I thought they did some good things. We just have a long way to go to where we need to be. Arledge said the relationships the teams have that lead to scheduling the scrimmage benefits both programs. We think it is good and that it brings out the best in both teams, Arledge said. It benefits us to play a quality program like Neville. We have a lot of respect for their program and the job Coach (Mickey) McCarty does.
