New Media and Citizen Journalism Training for Representatives of Ethnic Minorities of Georgia 21-23 October 2013 EUROPE HOUSE GEORGIA New and Social Media tools have revolutionized the way journalists report news, but more significantly they have also empowered citizens the world over, allowing them to communicate and disseminate their own information and opinion locally, nationally, and internationally. When used appropriately, these new tools can also act as bridges between nationalities and cultures, encouraging communication, cooperation, and discussion. From art and culture to social issues and local problems, New and Social Media can particularly empower minority groups. This training course will introduce such tools to participants as well as offer important insights into how to best use them to communicate not only within minority groups, both nationally and internationally, but also the wider society at large. Trainers: Onnik James Krikorian is a journalist and new media trainer from the United Kingdom. His work on Yezidis in Armenia and the Armenian, Azeri, and Avar minorities in Georgia has been published by Geographical, BBC Azeri, BBC Russian, RFE/RL, Azadlıq Radiosu, and Turkish Review. For five years he was the Caucasus Regional Editor for Global Voices Online and regularly trains journalists and civil society activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in new and social media. Giga Paitchadze is an experienced blogger and social media expert. He has worked at various times in different projects - a founder and initiator of one of the Georgian social networks, organizer of BarCamps and bloggers meetups, member of jury at social media meetings, he has served as an analyst and researcher for Georgian online and social media environment, trainer in social media activities, consultant in online media marketing. Eligibility criteria: - Georigan citizen representing any ethnic minority and residing in Georgia; - Knowledge of Russian or English language; - Computer literacy, ability to use some features of mobile phones (photo/video capabilities). Participation is free. Travel and accommodation costs of participants residing outside Tbilisi will be covered. The number of participants is limited.
