New Research Article Received :- STUDY ON COMBINING ABILITY AND GENE ACTION IN CYTOPLASMIC-GENETIC MALE STERILE (CGMS) BASED PIGEONPEA [Cajanus Cajan (L.) Millsp.] HYBRIDS C. K. CHETHANA*, P. S. DHARMARAJ, R. LOKESHA, BASAVEGOWDA, AND G. GIRISHA, MUNISWAMY, S AND YAMANURA, Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Research Station, Gulbarga-585 101, Karnataka State. ABSTARCT The experimental material comprising 78 F1s developed in a line x tester fashion involving six CGMS and 13 diverse elite genotypes were evaluated for combining ability for yield and yield attributes. The mean squares due to general and specific combining ability effects were significant for most of the characters. Estimates of variance due to gca and sca indicated preponderance of non additive gene action for most of all characters in the present study. Among female parents ICPA-2098. ICPA-2048-4 and GT-625A and among the testers M-3(GRG-2009), LRG-41, Asha and TS-3 were good general combiners for seed yield and its direct components. Out of 78 hybrids 39 showed significant positive sca effects for seed yield and its two or more component traits. The cross combination ICPA-2098 x M-3(GRG-2009), GT-625A x WRP-1, ICPA-2048-4 x Maruthi ICPA-2098 x Asha and GT-625A x BSMR-736 exhibited significant sca effects coupled with appreciable amounts of standard heterosis for yield and its attributes. These cross combinations can be potentially utilized in future breeding programmes for exploitation of hybrid vigour. Key words: Combining ability, Heterosis, Pigeonpea. Lines, Testers, Hybrids.
