New York has despicable weather at the moment…It is not - TopicsExpress

New York has despicable weather at the moment…It is not obscenely hot, but it is so humid that it doesnt matter…the rain seems to have brought in a warm, muggy front, and everything outside is soggy, swampy and sopping…Indoors is not much better, the water in the air seems to be outgunning the air conditioners, and the dehumidifier in the panic room is throwing as much heat as it is condensing water..…There is a clamminess about everything in the house, the walls, the rugs, the furniture…opening the windows just makes it worse, bringing in the dank, foetid air from the garden…That is the difference between summer rains and autumn rains in New York…The autumn storms are wet, windy and raw…but if you open the windows, you will actually smell the rain…I think it is more of a chemical response involving ozone molecules, but it does strike the human nose as a crisp, bracing scent…Right now all you smell is rot: rotting leaves, rotting petals, rotting wood, rotting garbage…that, of course, is veneered with the routine city smells, like bus exhaust, sewer drains packed with everything from newspapers to drowned rats, and the river….but this is the worst of the river…it is a miry, sulfurous odor, an ambient sliminess, with a foul gutted fish note at the bottom, a miasma that gets in your nose and mouth and settles there, present even after you leave the waterfront…Clothes just feel heavy and damp, they are saturated with sweat if you do any exertion at all outside, and even inside, if you are really activated and busy, you will have sweat pouring off of you in no time, with the air conditioning at full blast…It is an all-around, draining, very unpleasant sensation that one is in the middle of a giant, over-built bog with nine million people living in it…Or maybe a vast fungal forest...I actually expect the tap water to be brackish...
