New York reveals more and more qualities of itself the longer I live here. In the past, walking around this concrete jungle gave me a sense of confidence and excitement; sense of purpose and readiness for the future. Now, I feel completely different: a difference that comes in two phases. Nonnie visited me in New York 4 times (never taking a plane). I walk around now and I get hit with a boxing glove of emotion every time I pass a bench we sat on, a theatre we saw a show in, or a restaurant I introduced her to. I walk past places where we took photos together. I see her everywhere I go. It kills me. Im so thankful I have this. Im so thankful that in 40 years Ill be able to stand in these places and look at these buildings and say She was here. And she loved me here. I stand, for a moment, in these spots and my heart sinks. After a minute, the sadness fades to a smile. Ill always have her. Ill always remember her. And sometimes, Ill sit on the bench and smile because I know shes sitting next to me. Ill forever be able to stand in Times Square and feel her energy. New York - thank you. You kill me sometimes, but Ill forever be grateful for preserving the memories of my best friend and the greatest lady Ive ever known.
