New government job numbers show that if you divide the work force by age, most people’s unemployment rate is lower than the official 7.6 percent. For instance, among those aged 45 to 54, the jobless rate is just 5.7 percent. What’s throwing off the curve is young Americans. Ironically, the demographic that was most jazzed up in the last election to continue Washington’s current economic policies. When you’re 20 to 24-years-old, you should be starting your career, and coming out of college with your pick of job offers. Instead, early twenty-somethings have an unemployment rate of 13.3 percent. Worse, it’s a tenth of a point higher than a year ago. They’re the only age group whose unemployment rate has gone up in the past year. So parents, if you have teenagers thinking about college, now might be a very good time to try to talk them into becoming engineers instead of feminist poetry majors.
