New initiaves have been agreed to by Police Commissioners from the Melanesian Spearhead Group countries aimed at strengthening police cooperation between their Forces. The agreement came at the conclusion of the MSG Police Commissioner’s Conference yesterday in Nadi. Acting Police Commissioner Ravi Narayan says,significant progress has been made in the advancement of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), Regional Police Unit (RPA) as well as the Department of Peace Keeping Operations. A statement from the MSG Secretariat says, the initiatives are in their final stages with logistics arrangements now being finalized since their endorsement in June 2013. Another significant milestone was the MSG Commissioners’ endorsement to pursue bilateral arrangements in as far as capacity building, information sharing and human resources. The Fiji Police Force and the Royal Solomon Islands are finalizing their bilateral arrangements and sideline talks were held between the Papua New Guinea. Police Force and their Fijian counterparts on drawing up similar bilateral arrangements which will all be pursued under the MSG umbrella. The meeting also noted the work done towards recognising the contribution of female officers despite the absence of the Network and has endorsed programs aimed at empowering them. The Commissioner’s Conference also endorsed the set up of an MSG Police Sports sub-committee to look into the finer details of the Police Games scheduled to be held in 2015.
