New on my Tumblr: Benjamin Franklin, Liberty, and Security Those willing to give up liberty for security deserve neither and will lose both. I see this quote cited a lot, mostly by libertarian types. But the quote — at least the way it was quoted — makes no sense. Obviously, we do want to give up some liberty for security. For example, we give up our liberty to punch people in the face for the security of knowing in turn we won’t be punched in the face. This is the kind of thing that leads us to creating laws and police, etc. Unless you want to live in some sort of Hobbesian State of Nature, you should be regularly giving up some liberty for security. The real question is a matter of cost-benefit analysis — does the benefit from added security outweigh the cost of reduced liberty? In many cases, yes. buff.ly/1gZYVS3
