New study on egg safety in diabetic patients. Historically, - TopicsExpress

New study on egg safety in diabetic patients. Historically, eggs have been limited in our diabetic patients as we believed that they were more likely to contribute to cardiovascular risk in this group of patients. Turns out we mightve been wrong based on the latest study. There is significant discordance between countries when it comes to egg recommendations. In Canada, there is no limit posed by any regulatory body as they dont believe that dietary cholesterol contributes to vascular disease (they are probably right), while in Australia, diabetic patients are limited to six eggs per week....and in the U.S. diabetics are limited to 4 eggs per week....based on our guidelines which are based on limited science. The study was small, but split a group of 140 patients into two groups......one was the low egg consumption group and they were limited to 2 eggs PER WEEK and other sources of protein to match the HIGH egg groups protein intake...... and this group ate 2 eggs PER DAY. All participants were diabetic. The most interesting finding........no changes at all in total or LDL (bad) cholesterol, or triglycerides (circulating fats) in EITHER group. In other words.....eggs didnt increase cholesterol at all (or more scientifically two eggs is the same as 12-14 eggs per week in terms of its effects on cholesterol, which were nil). In the high egg group, the HDL (good cholesterol) levels did increase a bit....and this trend tends to be associated with heart protection. Both diets were well accepted, but the high egg group reported a significantly greater enjoyment of foods, less boredom, and more satisfaction with the diet. (this is a direct quote from the Medscape article). Ive stated before......my breakfast is consistently one whole egg, with 3 extra whites, half an avocado, and mixed berries.
