Newcastle Put In Bid For Clement Grenier There is news in France tonight that Newcastle have made a solid bid for Lyon play-maker Clement Grenier, and the news is being reported by le10sport. It appears that Newcastle have gone in and made a bid for the talented 23 year-old Lyon player, but there are also reports that there have now been three bids for the player – and they have all come in the last few days. Other English clubs that are reported to be interested in the player are Everton and Southampton, in addition to German club Bayer Leverkusen, and it’s not surprising a number of clubs are in for the talented central midfielder. The le10sport report also suggests that some bigger clubs could also come in for the Frenchman. And there have been reports of late that Arsene Wenger of Arsenal fancies the player. While Grenier was with the French World Cup squad and before he was injured, he let it be known he was surprised and disappointed that Lyon manager Remi Garde had decided to leave the club last month. It’s now almost certain that Grenier will leave the French club, for whom he has played 116 times with 15 goals and 23 assists, and the le10sport report says that Lyon know will have to sell their top player to improve their poor financial situation, and that the chase for the player is accelerating. Last season he played 41 times with 7 goals and 8 assists for Lyon, and he has now played for every French Youth side and 5 times for the full French side, and of course he did make the 23 man French squad for the World Cup, before unfortunately injuring his groin in training, and he had to withdraw. The 6’1″ play-maker is very close in style and technique to Yohan Cabaye, and he is a specialist from dead ball situations, such as free kicks just outside the penalty area. The 23 year-old would be a terrific signing for Newcastle, but the Tyneside club will have to show a lot more ambition than they have so far shown in their timid attempts to bring Remy Cabella to Tyneside. -Aaron
