Newcom Tavern: Dayton’s oldest standing structure was completed in 1798-99 for Col. George Newcom. Originally located at the southwest corner of Main Street and what is today Monument Avenue, the hewn log structure served as a residence, courthouse and store. Clapboard siding was later placed on the log building to formalize it. Joseph Shaffer kept a grocery store there from 1838 to 1894. The building was moved to Van Cleve Park on Monument Avenue in 1896, during the city’s Centennial celebration. The clapboard siding was removed to show just how far Dayton had progressed in 100 years. In 1964, the tavern was moved to its present location at Carillon Historical Park. In 2014, the building underwent a $100,000 exterior renovation. The logs were treated with a wood preservative and insect repellent. Oak lath was then applied, to which sash sawn white oak weatherboard was attached, and a new chimney face was built. The restoration was carefully planned so that it can be reversed without damage to the tavern if required in the future.
