Newly re-appointed Chelsea manager José Mourinho has caused quite a stir at Old Trafford in the past few weeks, by declaring his interest in star and want away striker Wayne Rooney. Nevertheless, it seems that Chelsea and Mourinho have a win-win situation over the saga... If Rooney stays at Manchester United: Should Rooney stay at Old Trafford, Chelsea may well have missed out on a world-class player, however, is Rooney really needed at Stamford Bridge? The Blues already have three top quality striker in their ranks, those being Romelu Lukaku, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres who scored a combined total of 58 goals last season. Moreover, many fans want to see Belgian Lukaku starting more games this season after impressing with West Brom after a first season with Chelsea blighted with setback after setback as he struggled to gain a first team position under André Villas Boas. If Rooney was to move to Chelsea, at least two of these three strikers would face a season of extremely limited game time, and an unsettled star striker is not good for squad morale, just ask David Moyes. Perhaps more importantly, all the while the awkward situation wrangles on, the more time Moyes has to answer hundreds of tenuous questions from the media every press conference and the more he has to devote a large proportion of his time to Rooney rather than watching his squad, fine tuning his tactics and preparing for the challenging season ahead. All the while, any perceived negative influence could threaten to undermine Moyes’ dressing room respect, and the Scot could struggle to command the authority that his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson did. Any situation in which Moyes’ job at Manchester United is made harder is a positive for Chelsea as United are one of their main title rivals. If Rooney joins Chelsea: If Rooney does join Chelsea the obvious advantage for the Blues is that they will have gained the services if a world-class player. Rooney has proven himself time and time again over the years, and still has many good seasons in him. Additionally, if Rooney does get his wish and moves to Chelsea, he will have set a bad example to any player at Manchester United. Should they themselves become slightly unsettled, they will refer to Rooney’s behavior and mimic it so that they too can get their move away from the club. What’s more, should Rooney leave many pundits and media columnists will question Moyes’ credentials to manage at a top club citing that he cannot even keep his best players. Rooney is also a fan favourite at Old Trafford, and many fans will be incensed to see him leave. The last thing Moyes wants is not to have the supporters’ full backing, as he looks to have a good first season. Whatever happens, it seems Mourinho has mastered the mind-games as he has manipulated a situation where whatever happens, there are more positives than negatives.[via GMS]
