News Update Drivetime Friday 31st October BGT scouting for talent ITV’s talent scouts will be out in Stornoway this weekend, as Britain’s Got Talent auditions are held at Era and at the Bridge Centre. There are open auditions for the star-making show at Era tonight for over 18s, and tomorrow from 12 noon until 4pm, the team will be at The Bridge Centre on the hunt for more acts to take with them to regional auditions. Major exhibition opens A major exhibition commemorating the centenary of the First World War opens tonight at An Lanntair at 6pm. Gairm nan Gaidheal, the call of the Gael, is to be formally opened by historian Trevor Royle. It features personal testimony from the islands, as well as artefacts loaned by the battlefield museum in Flanders, and has been curated by the Gaelic Arts Agency Proiseact nan Ealan. Media caused chair’s resignation Media speculation led to the resignation of Stornoway Port Authority’s Chairman Captain Angus Smith, according to a statement released today by the Port Authority. The statement said that in July Captain Smith, who is a boat builder, declared his interest in proposed works on a Port Authority vessel, as he might be helping a local engineer with his tender. Allegations were later made to the Board and an investigation carried out which found that no tender had been submitted by the local engineer, no contract had been awarded to that engineer and no benefit of any kind had accrued to Captain Smith or the engineer. The Board also found, however, that his informal discussion with the engineer amounted to a breach of its guidance for good governance. Captain Smith was censured, but the Board did not regard it as a resignation matter. After a media flurry, the Board met again on Tuesday and in light of public perception, and in the interests of the Port Authority, Captain Smith tendered his resignation. Sneak peek at Loch Seaforth A sneaky peek inside the new Loch Seaforth ferry has been offered on unofficial Facebook pages keeping enthusiasts updated about the vessel’s construction. Pictures show interiors with pale wood, wide staircases and reclining seats. She’s reportedly undergoing berthing trials at the shipyard in Flensburg, Germany at the moment, with no word yet on a date to enter Scottish waters ahead of her new route between Stornoway and Ullapool.
