News about Shirley Katz. She is not doing well. She had cataract surgery, which left her left eye almost blind. Her fall injured her shoulder, which was hurt from a previous fall last June - a few days before our reunion. I spoke to her this evening and she is still as sharp as ever. She fell again (this time a full flight of marble steps) and after 10 days, St. Luke’s Hospital discharged her last Friday. There were no broken bones, but much skin repair, stitches in her head and body bruising. In addition, she fell on her bad shoulder (rotator cuff ) and added injury to injury. Yesterday, my husband and I went to visit her at home. She did not leave the chair so I could not fully assess her ability to move around the apartment. She has an aide from 9-1 daily. She says she can fend for herself and is having a hard time giving up control and telling someone what she needs. We spoke about the future and needing to simplify life (moving out of the apartment? staying with help?) . She feels overwhelmed, physically and emotionally. This is a very trying time for Shirley.
