News coming from Spitfire radio 14 Nov 2013 Diced reindeer ruining spirit of Christmas Families in outcry as Lidl sells meat made from Santas little helpers in Yuletide promotion Lidls reindeer offers are cooking up a stormLidls reindeer offers are cooking up a storm Dont tell the kids, but Birmingham supermarkets have given a whole new meaning to Donner kebabs – by offering diced reindeer for Christmas. Santa’s little helpers are being offered as a Yuletide promotion by budget supermarket Lidl. And cubed Comet and Cupid will only set punters back £7.99. For those who don’t fancy Blitzen in bite-sized chunks, the German-owned business, which has branches in Acocks Green, Bordesley and Fox Hollies, has placed deluxe reindeer steaks on shelves in a bid to attract more middle-class customers. The supermarket seasonal sales pitch has been blasted by animal rights groups. One accused Lidl of “making a mockery of the Christmas spirit”. Yardley residents, who had Lidl Christmas flyers pushed through their doors last week, were stunned by the offer. One told the Birmingham Mail: “Roasting Rudolph is hardly grasping the Christmas spirit with both hands. We had to hide our pamphlet from the children.” Householder Darren Quinton, however, admitted he could see the funny side, but added: “I think it’s crazy and, yes, my two daughters would be very upset if they knew. “When the leaflet came through our door I thought it was a wind-up, to be honest.” The idea of eating reindeer is certainly no laughing matter for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. A PETA spokesman said: “The idea of ‘Rudolph’ being slaughtered and cut up for dinner makes a mockery of the Christmas spirit of peace and good will to all. “The reindeer being slaughtered for their flesh will just be young calves, forced to endure the terrifying ordeal of being herded by helicopter or snowmobiles, lassoed, and then dragged into trucks before being killed.” Lidl have defended the controversial promotion, insisting reindeer has been sold before and is now back by public demand. A spokesman said: “As in previous years, we are selling Deluxe Diced Siberian Reindeer as part of our premium range of products this Christmas. “An incredibly positive reaction from our customers during Christmas 2010 has led to Lidl selling these every year since. As a business, we only source products that meet our high standards of food safety, hygiene and animal welfare whilst never compromising on quality.”
