Next Wednesday, Oct. 29 is officially Pink Out Day at the the Charles George VA Medical Center. All CGVAMC employees and volunteers are invited to wear pink to help raise awareness of breast cancer issues or they can also walk the CGVAMC walking trail between 11 a.m.- 1 p.m., Wednesday, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Partner Violence Awareness. Early warning signs of breast cancer may involve the discovery of a new lump or a change in the breast tissue or skin. Women should perform a self breast-exam each month and any changes or abnormalities should be discussed with a doctor or physician. A clinical breast exam is performed by a qualified nurse or doctor. A healthcare professional will check for lumps or other physical changes in the breast that may need to be investigated. A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. An Early Detection Plan enables you to be proactive about your health by reminding you to do monthly breast self-exams and schedule clinical breast exams and mammograms. Leading a healthy lifestyle can help you reduce your risk factors for breast cancer and other illnesses. For more detailed information go to nationalbreastcancer.org/early-detection-of-breast-cancer
