Next up on cast interviews - Im thrilled to share what Ron has to say about his experiences with this role! Ron not only plays the dual baritone roles of Tom and John, but he has also served as our brilliant director throughout this process. 1. How long have you been studying voice? Ive been studying classical voice for ten years but Ive been singing as long as I can remember. 2. What attracted you to this role? I originally did this role in my undergrad and back then it was just assigned to me. After graduating, studying abroad, and going through my own life experiences, I now have a firmer understanding of the characters of Tom/John. I am attracted by the humanity of this role and I try to be as honest as I can when depicting either character. 3. What has been the most challenging part of directing this show? The most challenging part of directing this show is splitting my mind between performer and director. Ive never had to multitask so much while putting together a performance and it has been a real lesson in time management as well as learning about myself and my fellow castmates. 4. In what way do you relate to your character? I relate to Tom because hes a hopeless romantic, but he is also a little bit selfish. He wants Isabelle all to himself no matter the cost. For John, I get to delve into my dark side. Hes pretty rough and tumble and a no nonsense kind of guy. I have to imagine myself as pretty dark to get into character for his scene. 5. What are you hoping the audience takes away from this? Im hoping that people realize that opera, in all its forms, is for everyone. Regardless of class or distinction, race or gender; this music speaks to us all on a fundamental level of emotion. We all can love and we all can hate. I hope that everyone that comes out can see the real humanity in this music.
