Next week will be the 12th anniversary of the death of my mum. An only child, she lived 68 years and 12 days. For the first 23 years she was raised by a mix of aunties and my grandad. She had met my dad whilst working in a laundry in Clerk Street Edinburgh and they married in 1958. Im told she had the gift of intuition and for some strange reason owned a travellers caravan. Apparently it was one of those old fashioned romantically so called Gypsy caravans. Ive no idea what happened to this caravan, but her ability to instinctively read people passed down via family folklore often being referred to as a Spey-wife. Ive once seen a photo of her as a young lady in her early 20s and she was a truly beautiful lady hopeful for a wonderful future. Fast forward to 2002 when she passed away only 8 weeks after my fathers unexpected death. Unfortunately her married life was more unhappy than happy. I wish I could rewind her life for her and tell her everyday that she was loved, was valued and had made a real difference to the family. I cant change the past but I can learn from it. As such Im researching my family history and I wish I could sit with mum and ancestors and ask them about their lives, their ambitions and what made them smile. But I cant, so now Ive found over 3,200 family members to help answer some family questions. I wont get any in-depth answers, but Mums family history has genuinely taken me back to Egypt and the times of Cleopatra. Mums fortune telling days are most certainly not over and although she has sadly left us, her impact lives on. Thanks for the memories and for my new found interest in our familys fascinating history. Love you Mum - from the bottom of my very grateful heart x
