(CEBU CITY – Public Information Office) Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella who is now the acting Mayor has declared a suspension of classes in all levels both for public and private schools in this city for tomorrow February 1, 2014 Saturday in preparation for the tropical storm Basyang. The pronouncement was made by the citys Acting Mayor in a Command Conference for the citys preparations for the bad weather with the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council together with the Multi-agency Coordinating Team and volunteer groups held this afternoon January 31, Friday at the Mayors Conference Room turned Command Center. Labella made the pronouncement following the recommendation of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) Visayas chief Oscar Tabada since a public storm signal number 2 is hoisted by Pag-asa in Cebu. The Acting Mayor also underscored that for private establishments it will depend on the managements discretion if they will have work tomorrow, adding that he is in constant communication with Cebu City Mayor Michael Lopez Rama who is on a one week vacation as of this writing. Meanwhile, Tabada further said that Basyang will affect the city starting tonight until Saturday and recommended for preemptive evacuation for those living near the citys coastal areas because of a possible storm surge since it will be a high tide of 1.83 meters. For the meantime, based from Pag-asas weather bulletin number 5 issued at 5pm today, Tropical Storm BASYANG with international name KAJIKI was spotted at 201 km East of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte. It has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometer per hour (kph) near the center, with gustiness of up to 100 kph and moving west at 33 kph. The recent weather report further stated that residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal #2 and #1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under signal #2 are alerted against storm surges. Paga-asa has estimated the rainfall amount of Basyang from 5 - 15 mm per hour (moderate - heavy) within the 400 km diameter of the Tropical Storm. It is expected to make landfall over Southern Leyte - Surigao del Norte late tonight or early tomorrow morning. In addition, fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon and the eastern and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon due to the surge of Northeast Monsoon. The public and local DRRMCs concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11 P.M. today. Furthermore, the city is now in the state of preparedness for the incoming tropical storm. Keep posted for latest updates and stay safe. (By: Greggy Jiggs P.
