No nation can rise above any other with a poor educational system, neither can a nation be economically intact without any education. Were an African nation, yet even so we are based according to European standards and Eurpean methods, our way of living is western and even our way of thinking has become western, this among all,is a problem for an African nation. If we are to prosper in any way we are to develop, plan, innovate, generate, think and work according to African ways,if not then we are bound to fail. The following are not open or public letters, but these are letters Ive already sent to the Presidency, well seeing that Mr Jacob Zuma and his people do not seem to care or pay much attention to my letters,Ive decided to share them with you..My first letter was sent around April of 2014. The second letter was sent around July, the letters were formally hand written by me.Please share with your friends and families. This is the first letter- Dear Mr President Education is the root to actual physical survival as a child in this country. It is a preparation in which we are to improve the status quo of our nation, socially and economically. Our government has made education accessible but not equal in terms of how it is structurised. We have a school system that is based and structurerd upon the psychology of a white child, concerning the history and the language in which we are educated. After so many years of independence,it is repulsive that our education contradicts a country that is supposed to depict democracy, least a diverse nation. In a democratic nation, all is manifested equally and nothing is monopolized, more over if the nation is a diverse nation. Our education still remains to be colonial education. It teaches black children to subject to inferiority. It teaches a black child that his/her indigenous language is not as important as the Europeans. We continue to learn about European heros and their ways of living. In a diverse nation,we as black children are supposed to be taught about our own history, culture and taught to embrace our own heros. Culture continuity is supposed to be obtained through teaching our own cultures in our own languages. This European education as a whole, does not teach any black child economic patriotism, nor does it teach us as black children who we are. It does not teach us how we can make our country and Africa at large a prosperous and powerful continent. Half of South African black children do not know who Robert Sobukwe or Solomon Mahlangu is,or what role Jafta Masemola had in our struggle towards liberation because they continue to embrace Napoleon Bonaparte. We continue to learn about the French revolution, the Russian revolution,Germany and its former oppressors, but not once have we been taught about our own kind. Many black children do not know African heros, people like Kwame Nkrumah,Patrice Lumumba or even the African American,Malcolm X or Marcus Garvey. We still have children who are fascinated with European ways that they forget who they are,it is time we went back to our roots without any apologies. Indigenous languages do not seem to have a role in our education,we are even sometimes found to be in trouble for speaking our own African languages in our schools, clearly it is not embracing diversity then nor is it a way of resembling a rainbow nation. I am on my eleventh year of school, and never have I been taught about my own history, culture or language. I hope that the importance of this letter will be regarded. May I please receive a response from you Mr President. Sincerely Omphemetse Moeng The following is then my second letter; please take note, before writing my second letter,I had received a letter from the presidency of which they decided to direct me to the Minister of Education, now I was given her Personal Assistants email address,Mr Mabua. Now,I redirected my letter back to the Presidency because if our Minister of Education Mrs Angie Motshekga cannot ensure total delivery and arrival of textbooks in schools, what makes them think she is capable of changing our condition. Dear Mr President I wrote a letter directed to the presidents office just as indicated on the presidency website,I therefore expected a letter by the president and not an acting director. I do however understand that the president is a busy man,but however that may be,the socio-economic status quo of this nation depends upon the hands of the youth and thus,I think the education of our nation must be a priority to Mr president,if fellow South African citizens can go on in millions to elect Mr president as a leader, then Mr President must be able to respond and attend to important issues that regard the well being of our nation. I do not understand how the nation can go on celebrating freedom when the nation has its majority and natives constrained under the shackles of poverty and unemployment. In order to claim the badges and victory of freedom,Mr president we need to be mentally, physically and economically intact. Just because there are black men who dominate the power seats in parliament it does not simply mean there is in fact black power. With all due respect Mr President,I do not think you acknowledge the importance of my letter or even understand my yowl towards the independence of the education of the black child. When Europeans colonized Africa, they did not only take control of countries, but they colonized minds and colonized information, thus to break lose from the chains of colonization we need to have an educational system that operates and justifies power to those who have been colonized. Mr President I may not fully understand the system under which the world is run,but Mr president I do in fact understand white supremacy and I do also understand imperialism. I do understand that we as black people have been thwarted from the economic activities of this world, and I do understand why our educational system is how it is because it was never meant to empower the black child. I also do understand that the world being operated by white supremacists has never been conducted in a democratized justified manner. 21 years ago,Unequal education was among the factors that let apartheid flourish freely, but in terms of celebrating the 20 years of freedom has our nation attained in any way or presented any equal education towards the masses? 20 years of massive poverty and 20 years of inequality and unemployment is what we in fact are celebrating, under these massive conditions in which our people have been inclined, the so called revolutionaries which are the bourgeoisie sell-outs have been immensely enriched. We are celebrating a freedom that only shows black people as outcasts in the land of their forefathers.A rainbow without any equitable share of wealth. Economic advancement can only be attained if we move towards independence. All that we as black South African students ask for is a system that will work equally for us all. There can be no real economic growth and development where a whole people are denied access to the latest developments in science, technology, health, medicine, business, finance and other skills of survival because all these are stored in foreign-language granaries. Should we then suffer the harsh economic circumstances because people cannot in fact read or write in a European language? For the economy to thrive,is it not an advancement in skills, finance and developments in the business sectors rather than maintaining European cultures and languages? We have an educational system that offers more advantages to the white minority than to the black majority, there are even schools that offer all subjects in Afrikaans, but non that does the same in any African indigenous language, perhaps we are bound to never succeed as a race and perhaps we as black people are meant to never think for ourselves because then we might just see what the government is taking away from the people. Year after year, the presidency offers different manifestos, but to those who are conscious enough,it is perfectly clear that the only advancement that there is or development we see,is members of the government becoming richer and richer. Sincerely Omphemetse Moeng
