No ‘official’ dress code in public sector KUWAIT: Some institutions in the private sector apply a dress code, which has to be respected by their employees. If this rule is violated by an employee, he or she may be fired. In the public sector, there are no official dress codes for employees, according to officials from various institutions and ministries. A few days ago, the Director of the Capital Health Area Dr Tareq Al-Jassar issued a ministry decree forcing all staff working in the hospitals and polyclinics to wear decent dress. The decree was addressed to women, banning them from wearing very tight or short outfits that doesn’t suit local traditions, in addition to not wearing heavy makeup and high heels. According to Faisal Al-Dosari, Head of the PR department at the Ministry of Health, there is no official rule or decree from the government or the ministry forcing employees to wear decent outfits. “The ministry hasn’t issued any decree regarding outfits. But it’s known that doctors, nurses and some other employees wear uniforms. What they wear under it is their personal choice, and I’m sure they respect local customs,” he told Kuwait Times. Brig Adel Al-Hashash, Director of Interior Ministry Public Relations and Moral Guidance Department and Acting Director of the Security Media Department noted that the Ministry of Interior is not enforcing any special dress code for its employees. “Apart from those wearing official uniforms, there is no special dress code for employees to follow. Also, the ministry hasn’t issued any dress code for people visiting police stations. Maybe it was an individual act by the head of a police station to issue a statement for people not to come in shorts,” he explained. Kuwait University also issued a decree last year for students to respect wearing decent outfits, banning short and tight outfits for both genders. According to Mona, a 20-year-old student at the Faculty of Literature at the Kuwait University, students are not respecting this decree. “Many students wear really vulgar dresses that don’t suit the place, and some look like they are going to the beach,” she noted. An administrative staff at Kuwait University confirmed that there is no decree enforcing a dress code for the academic or administrative staff of the university, and said that such a decree may limit personal freedom. “I believe it’s unacceptable to set a rule telling me how to dress and not to use makeup, as I think such order may be given to student in the elementary grade,” stressed Tahani, a staff member at the administrative department.
