No other occupation brings a man into such familiar sociable relations with all grades and classes of people. The last thing at night -midnight -he goes browsing around after items among police and jailbirds. Making pleasant and lasting friendships with with some of the worst people in the world. And the very next evening he gets himself up regardless of expense puts on all the good clothes he has got -goes and takes dinner with ministers, MPs, MCEs and even the commander in chief, and some more of the upper crust of society.
