Nolan Woodrow Chris Wyman English 110 9/25/13 Firing Important Emotion through Music The two articles that I will be comparing as well as contrasting in this essay are “Individual Differences in the Enjoyment of Negative Emotion in Music: A Literature Review and Experiment” by: Sandra Garrido and Emery Shubert and “Music and the Communication of Emotion” by: Malcolm Budd. Both of the articles bring up several different and varying points on several of the same topics and different points of views on how music influences the reactions and emotions of people. One main point that the article “Individual Differences in the Enjoyment of Negative Emotion in Music” brings up is “Half of the population roughly enjoys sad music”, while two major points brought up in “Music and the Communication of Emotion” are “Music communicates emotion better than written or verbal language does” and “The theory of make believe truth”. The audience that I will be aiming to get my message through to is, other English 110 students who are studying the subject of “how music affects school and behavior.” To help and show them how to use music to help others with learning. “How does music influence human emotion?” is the question we will be looking at in this essay. Music can influence human emotion in many different and unique ways, varying from making a person happy to making a person feel like they are being watched. The two articles we will be looking at gave us valuable inside information as to how music generally influences and affects people and their emotions. Starting with “Individual Differences in the Enjoyment of Negative Emotion in Music: A Literature Review and Experiment” we learned that there is more than one way to see how music does in fact influence and affect human emotion. While “Music and the Communication of Emotion” takes that one step further and adds the theory of “Make Believe Truth”. Both generally describe the other and react to basically the same points of view while at the same time they argue several of the other articles points to tell the reader how the difference in music and how affects emotion stand out. The arguments are pretty straight forward and give a valuable insight as to what kind of affects that music can have on us and what kinds of emotions we will experience while listening to it. In a way they are basically the same article but at the same aspect they are their own separate article. Looking at all the information presented gives us a drastic idea the music can change the impact of emotion as well as how and when we experience that particular emotion. While the contrasting has a few things that both articles share. In this paragraph we will be looking at the differences and how each article compares to the other. Though there is a lot that each article shares, there is even more that does not match up at all. The first article that we mention uses graphs and charts to show that the effects of music on human emotion is in fact a real and quantifiable amount, while the second article goes to say that “the emotion experienced through listening to music is real just beyond the words for human speech to atone for.” The more people consider their options the more people reflect on the choices they’ve made in the past. “Like is the music I’ve listened to while doing my homework, really worth all the failing I’ve done or does it really help me to focus better and get good grades?” The one thing to remember is that studies have in fact shown that music is one of the leading causes for a student to get a better grade in school. Many things can benefit from the use of music. I am pretty sure that music is one of many things that can help to develop healthy relationships, but there is a lot of music out there that can develop un-healthy relationships. The difference between both kinds of music can be found in the beat as well as in any lyrics that may be sung as the music is playing. The strength of the people listening tends to be tested as they listen but good things come to those who wait, so here’s a benefit for listening to negative music: Strength. The benefit gained from it is how the strength of the relationship tends to harden around the people who share it. Music in many ways brings people together, or in a bad thing it can tear them apart. Depending on how and when you listen to those kinds of music. Music has many affects and of all them the best are: Bringing people together, Good grades, Etc… these are just three of the benefits which is why music can be helpful to different people. Students do so much better after listening to music that is in fact reliable in help with the study of that subject. Studies have shown that certain music/songs can influence the amount of time spent while studying the subjects: Math, Science, History, English, etc… the many differences in music can in fact be beneficial to the students. The more credentials that are put their way makes the surveys and studies more important in the fact that they can lead us into new ways of using music to help our kids. The way that music impacts students and the way that teachers and parents think that music impacts students are two different things. The possibility that music can make a student fail is only there when it is the wrong kind of music for the subject being studied. Math should involve music with a 1, 2, 3 beat, while Science should involve a little more educational information, History should include historic events in the lyrics (the song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” for example). And so on and so forth with music and studies. In conclusion the music and affects can vary in many different ways, but to look at how each can have a different affect in one way isn’t always the right way. The information presented is so different and vast that I can only present so much without making this a lengthy paper. There are more than way to represent the relationship between music and the effects on people. These are songs that represent that relationship: people are studying for History can benefit from the song “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, while to represent behavior the song “Vacation” can be used to represent the feeling before school gets out and all the students are raring and ready for summer vacation, The song “The Other Side” can be used to represent the relationship between two people. The more that people think about it the harder it is for them to understand the benefits between students who use music to help them study or form relationships, and those who don’t. A child can benefit from hearing their mother singing to them from birth into their early school days, because not only can it help to develop the child’s brain but it can the child to develop a liking for music.
