Non-migratory resident flycatchers of high altitude areas of the the Eastern Himalayas are descending to the plains of lower Bengal (Kolkata) in winter traversing thousands of kilometres. Species recently sighted in the city viz Slaty-backed and Snowy-browed Flycatchers have never been recorded in lower Bengal earlier. (The sudden arrival of a lone Desert Wheatear in Rajarhat also seemed very strange). Its definitely a great news for the birders and there is good reason to rejoice, as both the above-mentioned species are not easily available even in the hills. But is it just the first indication of the disastrous effects of air pollution, global warming and climate change on these tiny birds?? Or is it just another mysterious facet of bird behaviour that we were unaware of? Please share your views.
