North Dakota Observation #221 A Louisiana Boy in North Dakota. -25 remember that number. I will get back to it in a minute. Saturday, March 1st, I plan on going to the YMCA to work out. I hit the remote start and well, the car did not start. I ran outside to manually start it. Nothing again! It cranked but nothing. Ran back inside and called AAA. It will be a 2 hour wait. Remember that number -25? That was the air temp that morning in lovely Minot. So AAA comes and jump starts the car. Guess what? My 2007 Mazda 6 still would not start. Another thing to remember--Mazda. I will explain that in a minute. Well, the tow truck driver (who actually was in a pick up!) suggested Heet for the gas tank. Well being from the south, putting something called Heet in a fuel tank sounds like a deadly combination but he assured me that would do it. So off the the gas station for two bottles of Heet. So I return home and dumped a bottle in the fuel tank. Guess what??? Bingo the car started!!! So remember Heet is the answer for those -25 degree days in March. Well later in the day I had the bright idea to go test drive a new car. I had not done that in years. So what a better way to enjoy those sunny brutally cold days than to drive a new car. Well I told you to remember the name Mazda. So I went to test drive a new shiny gray (actually dirty) 2014 Mazda 3! Well the salesman braved the weather and started it up and pulled it up to the dealer. Off I went on a nice quiet cold expedition north toward the Minot AFB. Traveled about 10 miles north and turned around. For those who have seen Fargo (The movie), it is pretty bleak in the middle of the winter. Nothing to look at except blowing snow. Anyway, I digress. Five miles short of my destination (Mazda dealer) the car decided to commit suicide and shut down just short of the Minot city limits. Perplexed I pulled the car to the shoulder and stopped. Well this being a new car, it did not have a key to start it. It had a push button start. So I quickly remembered to put my foot on the brake and hit the start button. Nothing. Did it again and still nothing. This was not going well. So out came the cell phone and I quickly called the dealer. They would be there in 10 minutes. Well that 10 minutes became 15 minutes and then finally 30 minutes. Finally they show up with battery charger in hand and bingo the car started. So remember the number -25? Remember the name Mazda? I quickly found out that number -25 and the name Mazda does not go together. So on -25 degree days in Minot, dont drive a Mazda!!!! Lesson learned!
