North Queensland cyclone watch: category one system TC Gillian to intensify A cyclone and potential cyclone are expected to bring heavy rain to north Queensland and the Gulf country in coming days. Tropical Cyclone Gillian is a category one system, 255 kilometres west-south-west of Thursday Island and is expected to intensify as it moves south along the Gulf of Carpentaria. Gale-force winds are expected to develop between Cape Keerweer and Cape York this morning, and possibly extend further south to Kowanyama later today. The weather bureau says it may not cross the coast but it will bring heavy rain to the Peninsula district. The second system is a low in the Coral Sea that is expected to develop into a category one cyclone tomorrow. A cyclone warning has been issued for coastal areas from Lucinda to Proserpine. The bureau says heavy rain is expected to develop about the coast and adjacent inland from Cardwell to St Lawrence later today and it may lead to flash flooding. Residents in the lines of both systems should take necessary precautions. - ABC
