Not Expecting the Unexpected Olá!!!! Well today was - TopicsExpress

Not Expecting the Unexpected Olá!!!! Well today was transfer day!! But, first, let me tell you about the past week. We went to go visit our investigator Irene, who doesn´t know how to read. We were super excited because we had the Book of Mormon on CD for her, so that she could still read the Book of Mormon. So we get there and are teaching her and she´s not super excited about the CDs. Then at the end she wanted to see one of our pass-a-long cards. As she´s looking at it, we realize that she´s reading it! It turns out, she does know how to read. She´s been pretending for over a month...she just doesn´t like reading in front of people. Unexpected and cool. Also, last Monday we tried the best Chocolate Cake of Porto - and it lives up to it´s name. Super chocolately and in the center, super gooey. It didnt have any frosting, and it didn´t need any. Here in Portugal cake isn´t all about the frosting. It was delicious, as expected. This week we were having some problems finding new investigators - we were talking to a lot of people, but lots of them weren´t interested. But we ended up finding this really cool guy named Carlos. Even at 9:15 at night on our way home we can unexpectedly find awesome people. He is a member of a church that has a lot of the same beliefs as ours, and he was completely open to learning more. It´s just wonderful when we find people that really do just want to find the truth. Also, Happy Independence Day!! Sister Sandholtz and I sang a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and we ate sandwiches with American peanut butter. You can´t get more American than that. We had an amazing lesson with our investigator Sofia this last week. She always has so many doubts, and sometimes we would get distracted responding to her doubts. But this last week we taught the Plan of Salvation and it was awesome - it responded to so many of her doubts and just helped her understand so much better. It´s amazing - when we teach true doctrines, it brings the spirit, and that helps people understand so much better. As this is the week of transfers, we´d been telling all of our investigators that one of us would be leaving. It´s so hard sometimes for people to understand why one of us has too leave. And even being a veteran now of many transfer calls, I still get super nervous - we really never know what is going to happen. Sunday we also had a huge miracle - we had 9 investigators in church! It was amazing. And it was testimony meeting, where many of the testimonies were directed toward people investigating the church. Lidia came to church for the first time this week!!!! It was a miracle, and a huge blessing from our fast. So on Sunday night we finally got the phone call. I had been expecting to leave Matosinhos and Sister Sandholtz had been expecting to stay. But no. She left and will be training in Oeiras, and I will be training here in Matosinhos!!! Based on my companion´s name, Sister Bryner, she is American. This will (maybe) be my first time having a companion who doesn´t understand/speak Portuguese. That will definitely be an adventure. But I can´t think of a better place to start the mission than here in Matosinhos! We have a bunch of super awesome people and an excellent ward. I will be staying with the Sisters in Maia until Wednesday, and then leaving for Lisbon for training with my new companion on Wednesday. It should be great! We´re receiving a big group of missionaries - 23! So sometimes unexpected things happen. Sometimes, no - always, the Lord has a bigger purpose and plan than we can see. It is better to expect the unexpected so as to be prepared. But sometimes surprises are nice too. I hope that you all have a fantastic week!! Com Amor, Sister Giberson
