Not a Lemming - Recently a well known political leader and purportedly great speaker said the following and I paraphrase: “As Americans, we all have a dream of getting somewhere. We may not know where it is, we may not know how to get there, we may not know if we have arrived at where we were headed since we had no idea what our destination was, but surely we will reach that destination and, we’ll all be better off for it.” I can’t speak for others but I find this disconcerting on several levels. First of all, I expect our political leaders to have a clear vision of our destination as a nation. I also expect that vision to be consistent with Constitutional principles. Furthermore, leaders in any endeavor should be able to articulate what their vision is for the organization or institution, especially since that vision impacts on the lives of others. The above quotation was made by an individual who is extremely disingenuous and deceitful or one who is truly ignorant. Not being a lemming, I have no desire to blindly follow anyone, deceiver or ignoramus, into the darkness of the abyss. In government, business, the church, and in education we must know what we want our destination to be, how we plan to get there, and the costs in making that journey. This is also true in our personal lives. We all have a destination. It is the wise person who plans for his/her future, counting the costs, and staying the course. By doing so we can arrive at the place we want to be. Sure beats being a lemming.
