Not a single sitting member of Congress is openly atheist, yet 20% of Americans dont adhere to a religion. What do you think about atheists holding public office? Is it good or bad for the country? A. Americans need politicians who are actually representative of the public. Since a good percentage of Americans dont adhere to a religion, that should include atheists. B. I would not be comfortable with an atheist in public office because religion is part of our culture and culture influences our laws. Atheism undermines American culture. C. I don’t care if you are an atheist or religious. Americans need to look at their elected officials as a whole, not their position on just one issue. D. I, personally, am uncomfortable voting for an atheist. But secular politicians and candidates need to be more forthright about their moral grounding so citizens know what to expect.
