Not all ship’s figureheads depicted female characters. 1) The Whaler: VILLE DE BORDEAUX – 3-masted wooden ship of 822 tons built 1836 in Bordeaux. After an eventful career as a French whaler, it became an illicit merchant vessel in Australia. After serving as a light ship for 4 years, it was converted to a coal hulk in 1853 and broken up in 1860. 2) GENERAL BLANCO (formerly Coromandel) - 3-masted wooden ship 985 tons built 1844, Quebec. Arrived Port Adelaide (Au) 1856 under Portuguese flag. Was dismasted in a storm in 1856 then cut down to a lighter and eventually broken up for firewood in 1865. How good is it that the figureheads were preserved? I found these remarkable figureheads on display in the Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide (Au). More to come.
