Not enough people visiting the mosque? Want free publicity? Well, - TopicsExpress

Not enough people visiting the mosque? Want free publicity? Well, its easy. A radical Muslim just has to commit a terrorist attack and youll get all the publicity you want. Maybe one day a miracle will happen. Maybe one day our media will will just report what is going on instead of giving those who wish to spread Islam free publicity. I think they think they have a moral responsibility to give those Muslims who are not committing terrorist attacks a voice. But by doing so they are unwittingly encouraging bad behaviour and brainwashing the public. Theyre not intentionally brainwashing the public, but thats what theyre doing. Imagine for a moment that after reporting a terrorist attack in the name of Islam journalists did not tell us Islam is peaceful. Imagine for a moment that they simply reported what happened. Do you think that many people would have a different opinion of Islam if reporters stopped giving their opinion? Many people believe Islam is peaceful. Why do they believe that? Theyve never read the Quran, Sira or Hadith yet they say with confidence that Islam is a peace loving religion. They say this because theyre continually told by journalists (who also have never read the Islamic sources) that Islam is a peace loving religion. Do you know how brainwashing works? Brainwashing happens when people believe things simply because theyre told something over and over again. The order in which events are reported can also influence the way a person thinks. Imagine for a moment that some atrocity is committed by Muslims; this is reported on television and then they show some Imams (Islamic clerics) approving of and encouraging such acts against non-believers. Then after this they have a well dressed Muslim professor telling the audience that Islam does not approve of or encourage such things. After watching this many people will walk away believing the professor. But what if the professor spoke first, then they reported what happened and had Imams approving of and encouraging such acts. After the second example you would be more inclined to walk away with a negative opinion of Islam. It is important to note that in both examples the exact same information is given. We see terrorist attacks in the news often. Its only natural to assume that these events are being over reported. But how would you know if they are being over reported or under reported if your only source of information is the mainstream media? The following is a list of terrorist attacks as reported by major newspapers in Pakistan, Somalia, Nigeria, Thailand etc. List of attacks (If you are wondering why you havent heard of these read Surrender by Bruce Bawer.) Selective reporting is widely practiced. thereligionofpeace/index.html#Attacks It is true that some people are brainwashed because they only read or watch material which supports their view. To read something that challenges what weve been led to believe can be threatening. (A good example of a book that takes people out of their comfort zone is Gods Battalions by Rodney Stark. It takes intellectual courage to give people a fair hearing.) Like it or not, public perception is shaped by what our media reports and how they report it. Brainwashing is real and it is happening today. And since many of our leaders have been brainwashed too we cannot rely in them to protect us. If you value freedom you will have to fight for it.
