Not sure if the Indians will make the playoffs, but this team is getting better. Here is how they were built: PLAYERS DEVELOPED BY THEIR FARM SYSTEM – Pitchers Cody Allen, Josh Tomlin, Vinnie Pestano, and Danny Salazar, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and second baseman Jason Kipnis. In each of the following trades, the Indians traded pending free agents or other veterans and received players still in the minor leagues, or, in cases such as Justin Masterson and Chris Perez, were in their first or second years in the big leagues. 2006 – First baseman Eduardo Perez to the Mariners for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. 2008 -- Casey Blake to the Dodgers for Carlos Santana, prompting Keith Law of ESPN to write that this was a trade the Dodgers would “regret for a long time.’’ 2008 – C.C. Sabathia, who was a free agent at the end of that year, to Milwaukee for Michael Brantley, Matt LaPorta, Rob Bryson and Zach Jackson. Sabathia then signed with the Yankees. 2009 – Victor Martinez, a free agent at the end of 2010, to the Red Sox for Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price. At the end of 2010, Martinez signed with the Tigers. Masterson and Hagadone are in Cleveland while Price pitched for Columbus. 2009 – Third baseman Mark DeRosa to St. Louis for pitcher Chris Perez. 2009 – Cliff Lee, a free agent at the end of 2010, to the Phillies for pitchers Carlos Carrasco and Jason Knapp, shortstop Jason Donald, and catcher Lou Marson. Carrasco is in the Cleveland bullpen, Knapp is out of baseball, Donald plays for the Reds’ AAA team and Marson is on the disabled list. The Phillies at the end of 2009 traded Lee to Seattle which then traded him to Texas. He signed a free agent deal in 2011 with the Phillies. 2010 – Jake Westbrook, a pending free agent, and in a three-team deal acquired Corey Kluber. 2010 -- Austin Kearns to the Yankees for Zach McAllister. The following trades, the Indians received a combination of prospects (Yan Gomes) or young veterans (Shaw) or one established veteran. 2011 – Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and Joe Gardner to Colorado for pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Pomeranz is 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA this year, White was traded to Houston and had TJ surgery, Gardner is in the minors and Jimenez is 12-9 with Cleveland. 2008 – Acquired pitcher Joe Smith from the Mets in a three-way trade in which they traded Franklyn Gutierrez to Seattle. 2013 – Acquired pitchers Trevor Bauer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers from Arizona and outfielder Drew Stubbs from Cincinnati in a three-way trade in which the Indians dealt away Jason Donald, Tony Sipp, and Shin-Soo Choo. 2013 – Indians acquire catcher Yan Gomes and shortstop Mike Aviles from Toronto for pitcher Esmil Rogers. 2013 FREE AGENTS -- Nick Siwsher, Michael Bourn, Ryan Raburn, Scott Kazmir, Brett Myers, and Mark Reynolds.
