Not that Im giving up teaching...however, a few poignant things in this opinion piece (which would not score well on the OCWrites or FSA) hit home. First and foremost, I concur: My value as a teacher is now reduced to how successful I am in getting a student who has eaten no breakfast and is a pawn in her parents divorce to score well enough to meet my teacher evaluation goals. I hear my daughters frustration with her OCWrites score (and she has to pass the writing test--being a 10th grader). If my daughter, a capable and smart and good student, fears not passing (previous FCAT scores of 5 in reading), what do struggling students do with little or no support and burned out or overworked teachers? This may be the year that kills public education...and it will go not with a whimper, but a bang (although I shouldnt quote poetry or twist it to suit my creative means because it isnt on the computerized test).
