Not usually one for a rant or long status’s like this, but this kind of got to me a little bit. So many times when ever I say I’m at art school or doing illustration, people response are usually “oh wow fantastic”, but also there are a quite a few exceptions where people say “why are you doing that?” “you need to do a proper degree and get a proper job” “you’re not going to get anywhere with that” – (I’m not joking this is what a random bloke said to me) I usually ignore them and move on but recently its happened a few times. I can say I am in a fantastic privilege to say the “job” I aspire to do is something I have real love and passion for, ok it may not get me the big pay check, but that’s not why I choose to do it, its not my motivating factor. I forget the saying but, find a job that you love and you will never work a day in your life… now if you manage that I’m pretty sure you’ve won life! Another annoying thing that usually accompanies this person’s argument is “ok draw me a picture” now the equivalent I can compare this with is asking a comedian to tell you a joke. Of course you could, but It’s set up all wrong, and it probably won’t be very good, there’s no planning, no thought and reason as to why you are saying or drawing it, what’s the message behind it ect… Also it’s just really really annoying! A lot of people see an artist/ illustrator or what ever and say oh he’s good at drawing, and think by magic they were born that good, I can tell you it takes years of practice if not a life time of hard work to be “good” and I am no where near the level I want to be at yet, but I am working as hard a possible to reach that goal… so back to my first point that’s why I’m going to art school! Ok rant over, has anyone else experienced this?
