Note: The Cracked article is clearly meant to be irreverent and stupid. Unfortunately, a lot of Cracked readers are irreverent and stupid as well, and tend to consider Cracked to be some sort of science journal, apparently. So this one is for all you ignorant people out there. Lets begin with something on which we can all agree. In the history of animation, there has never been a development that has altered the popular creative landscape as much as the technique known as SquiggleVision (trademark pending). Wrong. So, so incredibly wrong. So obviously, nonsensically wrong you must be getting paid to say that. Most influential my a mile: The original Disney style, which is the foundation of, and still the recognizable style used, for almost all animated movies around the world. 2) The CalArts Disney Reduction - CalArts taught animation for decades based on the Disney style; in recent decades a number of prominent animators began producing art in a simple-lined style that dominated television programming in the 90s and 2000s, and has legitimately taken a place as a functional progenitor of future animation. And can we also finally agree that the Comedy Central animated vehicle that introduced this stunning breakthrough succeeded not because of the performances of Jonathan Katz and H. Jon Benjamin and Laura Silverman, but despite them? Not because of Dom Irrera or Ray Romano, but despite them? NO, we cant. I do not doubt there were people who watched these segments and thought, I love watching these things, but I really wish Katz would shut up for a few minutes; hes ruining the experience. When the Katz shorts came out, it was obvious that they were written in the style of traditional radio plays; the animation was a poorly produced, cheap add-on to make the shorts fly on television. The style of these cartoons is, literally, cheap as possible. I think the first series was done with a trackpad on a laptop. When the voice talent started drawing a crowd, they were able to fund actual animation for later productions. And, for those who missed it...why was this article written in the first place? It had nothing to do with writing something funny, interesting or little-known about Dr. Katz or his spin-offs. Tom, you mentioned a second very exciting project. Can you, without indulging in self-promotion, tell us all about it? Thank you. My production company, Explosion Bus (ExplosionBus), will soon be releasing The Homo Erectus Show, with one-minute animated episodes where we search for new species of males. Its anthropological without being all up in your face -- no easy trick. The show boasts two of the finest voice-actors working today, me and my assistant. Is it experimental? Yes. Do I hope it will grab an Emmy? Of course. Do I dream of a Cable Ace Award? Not really. That is all of the questions I will be taking. BTW, Tom Snyder really is the guy who invented sqigglevision. Or, put another way, the animator who teamed up with (other sources read was hired by) Jonathan Katz and created Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.
