November 11, 1813: *BATTLE OF CRYSLER’S FARM* The name Chryslers Farm is sometimes used for the engagement, but Crysler is the proper spelling. A British and Canadian force won a victory over an American force which greatly outnumbered them. The American defeat prompted them to abandon the St. Lawrence Campaign, their major strategic effort in the autumn of 1813. British: 900 regulars and militia; 31 killed, 148 wounded, 13 missing. U.S.: 8000 regulars (2500 - 4000 engaged);102 killed, 237 wounded, 120 captured. November 13: *SKIRMISH AT NANTICOKE CREEK, UPPER CANADA* An expedition of Norfolk County militia to capture American loyalist marauders who had been active in the area around Nanticoke Creek, near Lake Erie about sixty miles west of Fort Erie. November 15: Funeral of General Covington at French Mills. General James Wilkinsons army goes into winter quarters. November 16: British extend naval blockade along U.S. coast. December 10-11: *BURNING OF NIAGARA (NEWARK), UPPER CANADA* The unprovoked burning of Newark by a small force of American troops under the command of Brigadier General George McClure. McClure felt that his position at Fort George was untenable, and ordered that Newark be destroyed as he evacuated his command to Fort Niagara.
