November 14, FeastDay SAINT SIDONIUS, Abbot A NATIVE of Ireland in the 7th century, Saint Sidonius came in contact with some monks from the Abbey of Jumieges (Normandy) who had been sent into Ireland to ransom Anglo-Saxon slves, Impressed by their life, he joirneyed to Jumieges and received the monastic habit about 664. Some ten years later, he was sent to the monastery of Herio and then to the monastery of Quincay; and in 674 he accompanied Saint Audoenus to Rome. About 685, Sidonius returned to Jumieges and at the request of Saint Audoenus founded a monastery northest of Rouen, which became known as Saint-Saens and was destroyed in 851 by the Normans. After the death of Saint Audoenus, Sidonius was instrumental in founding still another monastery in that region. Thus, he played a leading role in the religious life of his age. Like all pioneering religious, Saint Sidonius weathered many storms both physical and spiritual by clinging steadfastly to trust in God. He was devoted to prayer and penace, and helped innumerable souls before his death. PRAYER: Lord, amid the things of this world, Let us be wholeheartedly committed to heavenly things in imitation of the example of evangelical perfection You have given us in Saint Sidonius the Abbot. Amen.†
