November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln delivers his Gettysburg Address. The keynote speaker for the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg had been Edward Everett, a fiery and popular orator who spoke for around two hours before Lincoln took the podium. Lincolns short speech, lasting only around two or three minutes, stole the show because of its quiet determination, succinct delivery, and focus on equality and freedom for all. In this two-minute moment, Lincoln beautifully articulated the American cause of unity and democracy. It remains one of the strongest examples of American political prose over time.
