November 5, 1899, was a bad day for the Jones Dry Goods Company. Its store at Sixth and Main was destroyed by fire. But as Mr J. Logan Jones often said, The Jones Brothers are not quitters. With over $75,000 worth of dry goods still in warehouses, he was back in business at temporary salesrooms at 611 Main the next day. He had sixteen buyers scouring the markets for novelties and staple goods. When local suppliers were exhausted, his buyers went East, where they laid in an entirely new stock of the latest goods. Within two weeks, the new Jones store on Thirteenth and Main resembled a beehive. Hundreds of boxes, bales, crates and packages were rolled in from big vans drawn up on the curb. A large force of men worked until late into the night putting up shelving, cutting arches through between the three buildings and arranging for the opening, which was expected to take place on the first day of December.
