November 6: Making tough decisions. It seldom is a “fun” thing to do. Making hard decisions is not enjoyable, even when one is good at it. The simple fact is, there usually are reasons the decisions are not easy and that usually means someone is left unhappy. November 6, 1861, Jefferson Davis officially was elected President of the Confederate States of America. It was not an easy situation for Davis. Like many who played key roles for the Confederacy during the Civil War, Davis had a long and storied career serving in the U.S. Military and Government. He was a graduate of West Point, served in the Black Hawk and Mexican Wars – being wounded during the latter conflict. He was a U.S. Senator from Mississippi and served as Secretary of War in President Franklin Pierce’s Administration. Davis said the path, as it were, may be lined with roses but they were just hiding the thorns. Upon my weary heart was showered smiles, plaudits, and flowers, but beyond them I saw troubles and thorns innumerable,” he said. When we have decisions to make, our biggest factor in making the choice is deciding what is biblically right and wrong. Knowing that gives us the path to take. Then it is up to us to take it. The path may be full of thorns. We may believe we are wasting our time. But if it is right, biblically, then we cannot go wrong. “I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain.” (Galatians 2: 2).
