November is Diabetes Awareness Month... An insulin pump is a method of insulin delivery for those with diabetes who require insulin as part of their treatment plan. The pump can be programmed to deliver different patterns of small amounts of rapid-acting insulin that mimic background insulin. The pump-wearer will still count grams of carbohydrate eaten at meals & snacks & enter the amount of insulin to be given right then to cover the carbohydrate eaten (if needed). The pump-wearer can also deliver a correction dose of insulin too depending on their blood sugar result when they do a finger-stick test! People living with Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes (who require multiple daily injections of insulin) are pump candidates & MANY insurance plans now cover insulin pumps & insulin pump supplies.
