Now it might be difficult to argue that the subject of Western Movies is somehow political. Yet I believe that of all movie themes none better than Westerns personify the national character in its purest ideals. The concept of freedom, roaming the countryside in search of either identity or riches. A place where Character is fate. Where self defense assures our survival. Good and evil coexist but easily distinguished. Where knightly chivalry remains forthright in every good man. Justice is not abstract but a sudden revelation. Westerns: Where would we be without them. Emblematic, iconic and evocative of American Ideals. Few words spoken with absolute authority, righteousness validated by overwhelming and accurate deadly force. Where fundamental truth is the only dialect spoken, a mans fate is indeed determined by his character. time and the elements separate the good from evil. Without residual ambiguity. Has this become an anachronism or are its themes still representative of our national beliefs and identity? Has the cowboy disappeared to be replaced by a socially aware overly sensitive metro-male?
