Now it’s a known fact that some people do abuse grace and use it as a license to sin. But just because some people abuse grace, it still doesn’t make grace wrong. Even in the first century this phenomenon already occurred: What has happened is that some people have infiltrated our ranks (our Scriptures warned us this would happen), who beneath their pious skin are shameless scoundrels. Their design is to replace the sheer grace of our God with sheer license – which means doing away with Jesus Christ, our one and only Master. (Jud 1:4 MSG) The main difference between doing good works under the Old Testament and under the New Testament is the motive for doing them. Under the Old Testament they were compulsory and obedience was non-negotiable. Under the New Testament good works are a result of being in a relationship with God and we want to walk in them. They are a by-product of being led by the Spirit. Grace is actually an infinitely stronger motive for doing good works than the law (or any other principle-based approach), because it comes from within us whereas the law shouts at us from the outside. For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that having denied ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live discreetly, righteously and godly, in this present world… (Tit 2:11-12 MKJV)
