Now that I live alone, I wake up everyday hearing my phone ringing. It would be Mom calling to ask me if I want to come home to have breakfast. After about an hour later she would call me to ask if I have ironed dress to wear to work. After few minutes she will call to remind me that I should drive slow and probably get the car cleaned too. By around 1 pm she would call again and ask if I have plans to come home for lunch and if I am eating from outside I should eat healthy. By 4 pm she would call again and ask me where the keys to my house are kept so that she can send the cleaner to get it cleaned and collect the laundry as well. While I reach home, I would meet her on the drive way as it is common to both homes, she would ask me how my day was, how there are things that I am not doing right which she doesnt agree with, how I should take extra effort to be nice to relatives and what should I do to change, importance of getting married and at last ask me with lots of love Mone, wouldnt you marry? When I say Yes, Mom, will marry soon She will smile and just to reaffirm, say If I am not there, you will be all alone, so you need to marry OK I smile and go home. By evening 7 she would call again and tell me about some routine stuffs that happened that day and ask if I want to come home for dinner and later say Goodnight and keep the phone. This is the routine. My sister sometimes jokingly complains that Mom is partial and supports me even if I am wrong, :) I guess she is.right, she is a bit, a wee bit partial and is probably because she knows that there would be no one else to stand by me, if she doesnt. Today morning, I was dressed up in my Red Silk kurta and golden kasavu dhoti, wearing one of the most expensive perfume, wearing all my Gold chains, bracelet and rings, wearing my Doc and Mark sandals, as I walked out from my house feeling like a king, and while heading towards the car, she came running. I thought she was going to say something important. I was sure she is going to praise the way I was dressed. She just came and asked in a serious tone Did you brush your teeth ? I just looked around to see if someone actually heard her ask me that. In a firm tone I replied Amma, what is wrong with you. I am going to be 33 in 2 months and dont you think, I can take care of my personal hygiene ? She just started walking back to the house dismissing my question and said Now that you stay alone, I dont trust you. Until you were 8 you were very lazy to brush your teeth. So I just asked. Drive Safe . I just stood there for sometime looking at her walk into the house and smiled to myself.
