Now that Samsung have finally unveiled their Galaxy S3, it is being heralded as the new Android "super phone" and best smartphone to hit our shelves this year. This isnt likely to go down too well with the HTC One X which was sitting happily on its perch as the best phone on the market until the S3s arrival, and is no doubt still regarded as the best by HTC and their fans. So which is the better phone? Lets find out as we put the Samsung Galaxy S3 upon against the HTC One X in a battle for supremacy! Dimensions Not much to choose between the two phones in terms of size and weight. The HTC One X is slightly the smaller phone at 70 x 134mm compared to the 71 x 137mm of the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy is thinner at 8.6mm to 8.9mm but the One X the lighter of the two at 130g to 133g. Screen Once again, like dimensions there is very little to choose between the two phones when it comes to screen. The Galaxy S3 comes with a Super-AMOLED 4.8-inch display, while the HTC has a Super-IPS 4.7-inch screen, Samsung clearly using their ever-so-slightly larger phone to their advantage in screen size. Both phones use a 720 x 1280 resolution and each has excellent pixel density, the One X with 312ppi and the S3 with 306ppi. The lesser ppi in the S3 is due to the larger screen, but you would deserve ‘ppi difference spotter of the year if you managed to distinguish the two when it comes to quality. Viewing angles are superb on both phones but it is Samsungs use of the new Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and PenTile matrix that give it the edge in this department. Camera Familiar story here as both phones use 8MP rear-facing cameras, each with the ability to record at 1080p. Whichever phone you have, a quality picture is never going to be lacking. Samsung do happen to steel a march on HTC with their 1.9MP front-facing camera outdoing the 1.3MP of the One X. The ability to take photos simply by saying "Cheese!" on the S3 is also much more fun than the boring old way of pressing a button! Processor The processor is an essential element in the modern smartphone and both HTC and Samsung have delivered. The One X uses an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip, clocking 1.5 GHz, while the S3 uses Samsungs own Exynos 4 Quad 1.4GHz chip, clocking 1.4 GHz. This puts the HTC ahead on paper, but its safe to say the new Galaxy is no slouch! Storage Finally a category with a definitive winner and it is the S3 that takes it. With three storage options: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, the Galaxy makes the 32GB One X look silly. In addition to this the S3 comes with MicroSD card slot whereas as strangely the One X does not - a big advantage in favor of Samsung. Software Both phones use Googles brand-new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, although the Samsung does have a slightly updated version (4.0.4 to 4.0.3). The One X runs its own proprietary interface, HTC Sense, while Samsung has their version of this known as TouchWiz. As both pass on Vanilla Android as the interface, each phone has its own unique UI. It is hard to choose between the two handsets in the software department as both are extremely easy to use and ooze class. Battery The HTC One X has an 1800mAh battery which is less powerful than the 2100mAh battery in the S3; however, it does provide great battery life. How well the S3s battery fairs in testing remains to be seen, but specs alone do hint at it giving decent running time. Price The sums youll have to pay for these phones depend on your location. In the US and most European countries you can buy the unlocked One X for about $580-600, while the new Galaxy S3 will cost you $750-800. As for contract versions, in the UK and many other European countries youll get both phones for free, their monthly fees being rather different - as you could have guessed, the Galaxy S3 will cost you about $10 more even on contract, at least if youre in the UK. However, its still a good price for such a powerful phone. Verdict Never has there been such a close battle between smartphones and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on either of these devices, youre in for a treat. However, there must be a winner and that winner is the Samsung Galaxy S3, which triumphs for being just that little bit better in the majority of specs.
