Now that the rains are finally starting to fall I felt like it was a good idea to share the start of my all weather skate kit. Titanium Independent trucks that will hopefully prevent axle rust Rush All Weather Ceramic bearings Blood Orange grip patches - will place this in the middle of my board and not on the nose and tail as it is super grippy and would eat my shoes away too fast! I assume it wont succumb to water as quickly as normal smooth grip. Right now I have some 82a Satori Movement wheels which are great for sliding in the dry streets but too hard in the rain so they just slip out. I have used some 78a Satori Movement wheels that are perfect in the rain but tough as hell to slide in dry conditions. Unfortunately the 78as were cored and Ive since destroyed them after years of abuse. Ive ordered some 80a Mikendo San Bones that I hope will be the perfect middle ground. If I want to do nose / blunt / tail slides at a park or street spot I would still need to carry a set of hard wheels around to me. As for the deck I have to attempt to waterproof it. I have heard soaking it in mineral spirits can help but Im pretty much just going to assume a wooden deck is going to get destroyed. Especially considering every tail drag or nose slide will expose a more raw version of the wood. But Ill still give the mineral spirits a shot because its a cheap easy attempt at fixing a problem. As for the hardware I have some normal steel hardware. Supposedly putting mineral spirits in the hardware slots will prevent these from rusting. Then there is rain gear. If its a warm rain a bathing suit does the trick. Here in SF solid water proof / breathable gear is a must unless you want to shiver and be uncomfortable. REI makes comfotable rain paints and Ive scored a Marmot Gore Tex rain jacket. I tested this setup in Portland in a heavy storm and stayed dry after skating for about 5 hours through the city. The jacket and pants both have good ventilation options. The only remaining issue is footwear. A few companies make water resistant skate shoes but Ive yet to try them out. I think thats next on the list because dry feet let you skate a lot longer. I might also try some waterproof spray but after a few ollies that zone is going to get wet.
