Now, what is the difference between saying something versus singing it? The word for song, shirah, is related to the word yashar, which means straight, honest, connected. Song has the power to cut through the resistance of the mind and take us directly to the truth. When we speak, we risk dissonance and separation, whereas song takes us beyond speech and creates peace, brotherhood, and love. So, when a true song is sung, it creates a sense of unity, balance, and symmetry in the world, particularly when it reflects a truth. The mystical nature of a song is that it allows all the different notes and all the different harmonies to blend together. They become part of a complete symphony, which is again like the song of the Jewish people. Each person has a particular note in the symphony of the nation that needs to be expressed in its own unique way. When it comes together it creates great unity among the diversity of the notes, which is a great message that Israel is still trying to understand at the time of this writing. That is the difference between speak- ing and singing: Speaking involves thoughts and ideas, and that often creates dissonance because everybody has to be heard, and not all are in agreement. Singing, however, creates togetherness, and a wonderful sense of harmony and unity. It is where the energy of unity within each person comes from.
