Nows the time to repair your lawn and prepare for next spring! A - TopicsExpress

Nows the time to repair your lawn and prepare for next spring! A power aerator works best, but even those units you tow behind your lawn tractor work. Our Virginia clay soils need aerating at least once a year, and a top-dressing of compost adds organic material and nutrients to help improve your soil. In addition to overseeding with a perennial fescue, I like to spread Annual Rye over my lawn in the fall, especially over high-traffic areas or areas overrun by bermudagrass. It grows all winter, stays green, and keeps most of the mud out of my house. Power aerators rent locally for about $35 for three hours to about $200 for the week. You can buy tow-behind units in the $100-$150 range. Compost costs about $30 a yard, plus delivery. thisoldhouse/toh/how-to/intro/0,,20733846,00.html
